I did 27K of those miles in 22 months. The GT 1.9jtdm went to 79K with absolutely no problems (engine wise). I did 28K of them in 12 months. Second 159 1.9jtdm went to 101K miles, and was a pain in the arse. The german made MAP sensor went, the EGR gave up, the manifold ate itself and the thermostat went.
The 2.0 JTS in 156 is an improved 16v Twin Spark, which is oil thirsty and likes to seize on the crank. The 2.2 JTS in 159, sharing just the name with its predecessor, is an Opel-derived unit with not-so-impressive power and is rather thirsty.
Engines, chassis, transmissions and brakes tend to very reliable, and in many cases are common across several brands, like the ZF 8 speed transmission for example. The Alfa Giulia is a remarkable car for the money, especially in the area of intangibles - style, driving feel and dynamics, and simple ergonomic comfort.rOzo6m.
